da pinup bet: Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is still expected to make at least one ‘marquee signing’ this summer.
da mrbet: He’s already nabbed Petr Cech from London rivals Chelsea, which has led to many people claiming the Gunners have instantly become serious title contenders as a result. But surely Wenger needs two or three more reinforcements before he can truly mount a serious bid for Chelsea’s title?
It’s no secret Arsenal are crying out for a world class goalscorer, while they’re still thought to be in the market for a defensive midfielder after missing out on Morgan Schneiderlin to Man United.
So it’s no surprise to see the north London outfit being linked with almost every player in Europe this summer. But who do the Gunners faithful actually want?
We drew up a list of 15 players the Gunners have been linked with since the end of last season and asked Arsenal fans to vote for the players they want the most.
Voting thumbs up registers one point against a player, while a thumbs down reduces a point. The total score then ranks the players accordingly, and the results are quite surprising.
So here are the five players Arsenal fans actually want this summer…
5. Lars Bender
It seems not a single transfer window goes by without the German international being linked with a move to north London, which indicates just how long Arsenal have been in the market for a top class defensive midfielder.
The 26-year-old Bayer Leverkusen star is valued at £15million but will undoubtedly cost a lot more if the Gunners are to tempt the Bundesliga outfit in to parting with him.
And the fans are still pretty keen on seeing him in red and white, with 720 people giving him the thumbs up…
4. Karim Benzema
Despite Arsenal’s need for a world class striker and the France international looking increasingly likely to be leaving Real Madrid this summer, Benzema still isn’t the fans’ number one choice.
Yesterday the striker posted a picture of him on a private jet and said something along the lines of “let the past be the past” which sent fans all over Europe praying it’s their club he’s supposedly heading to.
Still, 977 fans gave him a bit fat thumbs up. 471 of them don’t want him, though, which suggests they’re either stupid, secretly Spurs fans or remain hopeful that Yaya Sanogo is actually the club’s next Thierry Henry.
3. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
The Gabon international has been heavily linked with a move away from Borussia Dortmund this summer, and Arsenal are reportedly well in the race for his signature.
The 26-year-old banged in 26 goals in all competitions for Dortmund last term, which has seen his stock rise significantly this summer.
And although less of the Emirates faithful want him over Benzema less Gunners gave him the thumbs down, which edges him in front of the Frenchman as the third best player Arsenal fans want this summer…
2. Alexandre Lacazette
No real surprise here because, quite simply, why wouldn’t you want your team to sign a player who scored 27 goals in just 33 Ligue 1 outings last term?
Lacazette’s form last season has him wanted by a number of top European clubs, with Arsenal obviously being one of them.
Lyon are desperate to keep hold of him and have recently placed a whopping £40million price tag on his head. Would Wenger part with that sort of cash? Well if the last two summer windows are anything to go by then, well, yes he will.
Over 1,000 Arsenal fans gave him the thumbs up in this poll, which tells you all you need to know about how well he’d be welcomed to north London should the Gunners managed to sign him.
1. Robert Lewandowski
The Polish goal machine was linked with a huge move to the Emirates Stadium last week, which sparked a bit of excitement amongst Arsenal fans who are, probably, not a bit confused about who they really want as the club’s marquee striker signing.
Lewandowski’s Bayern Munich future looks to be in doubt this summer given the rumours linking him with several clubs since the end of the last season.
Over 1,500 Arsenal voted thumbs up for Lewandowski and he clearly is the number one choice as the striker to lead Arsenal back to Premier League glory.
But will they get him?
As for the rest, poor ol’ Yoann Gourcuff came bottom of the pile with just 110 thumbs up, while it was quite a surprise to see Man City striker Edin Dzeko voted in eighth out of 15.
