da bwin: The well seems to be drying up at Manchester City. Well not really, but the owners are rightly adopting a much more cautious policy with their funds, and Roberto Mancini is not happy.
da 888casino: Up until the beginning of the week, Manchester City remained the only club in the Premier League who had not made a signing during the transfer window. It’s not so much that they were desperately in need of reinforcements, but the club have moved quickly to land Jack Rodwell from Everton. A surprise move, and I don’t see how it really benefits the player, but Mancini will at least be warmed knowing the club are still willing to buy.
I’m just struggling to see how Roberto Mancini can be in this mood over a lack of real activity beyond Rodwell. This isn’t a team who are struggling to find their place in English football, and while their extremely powerful squad were taken to the last day of the season, I see faults in Mancini’s management rather than in the squad itself.
The manager wants more strikers, but why? The club have enough strikers for themselves and at least two other clubs. And while City are indeed struggling to move on players like Emmanuel Adebayor and Roque Santa Cruz, they were not giving much thought to these problems when they put forward those ridiculous contracts.
With Mancini at the moment, it seems more a case of “I want,” rather than “I need.” The club will of course want to better their performance of last year in the Champions League, but does it really require the owners to part with another mind-numbing sum of cash? They’ve played that game, now it’s time to be a little more sensible.
The club are perhaps short of quality at centre-back, but it’s hardly enough for the manager to express some manner of disgust at a lack of activity this summer. After all, surely he would have had some say in the club opting to sign Stefan Savic.
Mancini wanted Robin van Persie to bolster the front line, however that seems increasingly unlikely to happen. A move for Daniele De Rossi also makes little sense considering his age and the fee Roma are demanding. But City have already been praised as having the best strike force in the Premier League, so what’s the problem? It’s not like the players at Mancini’s disposal are incapable of contributing in a big way, and perhaps he should look at himself to bring the best out of Edin Dzeko again, rather than just shipping him off.
And that brings us nicely onto Mancini and whether he’s really worth the contract he’s just been offered. Sure, City are going to have no problem throwing lucrative contracts at their managers, but is Mancini really among the elite? So he’s upset at a lack of transfers, but there are undoubtedly managers who could have done so much more with what he has in his squad.
Manchester United appeared likely to with the league last season, but a squad like City’s should have roared past their rivals and landed the title much earlier than they did. Mancini handled the Carlos Tevez incident well last season, but isn’t his actions what you’d expect of most managers?
Going back to his time in Italy, Mancini did very well in domestic competition, but he notably failed to take Inter Milan where they needed to be in Europe. There’s very little argument for a weak squad at Inter, but we saw similar failings last season for City. And I won’t buy this argument that the club or it’s players are not used to Champions League football and it’s demands: Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure, David Silva, Edin Dzeko, among others, have all played in that competition. And isn’t shelling out ludicrous amounts of money made even more stupid if you’re being handicapped by a lack of European experience?
Besides lacking in their defence—which Yaya Toure can be used in if an emergency should arise—City have nothing short of an excellent squad who are good enough to win the Premier League again. I’m not sympathetic towards Mancini and his desire for more players, as it just looks like a case of demanding a repeat of what’s already been done. Demanding for the sake of it.
City have already beaten 10-man Chelsea in the Community Shield, and they looked good doing it. This is a good squad that doesn’t need big changes.
