Aston Villa fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was confirmed by the club that John McGinn had suffered a fractured ankle in the 3-1 defeat to Southampton on Saturday.
According to The Telegraph, the Scotland international is expected to miss three months as a result of the injury, which will come as a major blow to the Villans as they battle to avoid relegation.
The former Hibernian midfielder attempted to tackle Cedric Soares by the dugout before falling awkwardly, having appeared to get his studs caught up in the Villa Park turf.
The 25-year-old is a key player for the Midlands-based side, having scored three goals while grabbing two assists so far this term, and his energy in the middle of the field will be a big miss for Dean Smith.

If losing McGinn during the 3-1 defeat to fellow strugglers Southampton wasn’t enough, the loss means that Smith’s side have slipped into the bottom three, having amassed 15 points from 18 Premier League games this term.
One supporter named Jimmy said that Smith is “gonna get even more hate after this” as McGinn “shouldn’t have been playing” – the Scottish star has started all 18 of the Villans’ Premier League games this term, and due to his all-action playing style, he probably could’ve done with a rest.
These two fans had contrasting views on the situation.
One fan said that a “miracle” is needed now following the McGinn update, appearing to come across as pretty pessimistic over the whole scenario.
On the other hand, another supporter with the username ‘Dane Bird’ said that it could actually be a “blessing” for Villa’s season.
To round off the reaction, these three fans could not mirror Dane Bird’s optimism, with the general flavour amongst this trio being one of doom and gloom.
‘Tim’ said that McGinn would be a “major loss”, whereas ‘Tom’ said that avoiding relegation is now a huge ask for the club.
The final supporter simply revealed that they are gutted for McGinn, and it’s hard not to echo that sentiment with the influential cog set to be missing until around mid-March in what is a huge blow for Villa.
